Efektivitas Distraksi Audiovisual Menonton Kartun Terhadap Nyeri Saat Pemasangan Infus pada Anak Prasekolah

Abstract

Infusion insertion is an invasive procedure that may cause pain, fear, anxiety, and non-cooperative behavior in preschool children. This case study aimed to describe the effectiveness of audiovisual distraction by watching cartoons in reducing pain responses during infusion insertion in preschool children at Bhayangkara Hospital Level III Manado. A descriptive case-study approach was used involving two preschool children aged 3–5 years who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected through observation, brief interviews with parents, documentation, and assessment using the Wong-Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale. The intervention consisted of providing a cartoon video through a mobile phone while the infusion procedure was performed. The observations showed that both subjects were more cooperative and their attention was diverted toward the cartoon during the procedure. After the intervention, both subjects were documented at face 2, interpreted as slight pain, and the families reported that the technique helped reduce the children's discomfort, fear, and anxiety. The findings indicate that audiovisual distraction using cartoons is a simple non-pharmacological intervention that can support atraumatic nursing care during infusion insertion in preschool children. Nurses are encouraged to consider the child's preferences when selecting audiovisual content and to apply the technique as a complementary approach to improve comfort and cooperation during invasive procedures.
